SCABIES IN DOGS


When your pet has scabies we call it mange “Sarcoptic mange” or also “Canine scabies”; some signs of it are hair loss, skin scales, and severe itching…The scabies mite in dogs and cats are different species than the mite that lives on human beings; however, dogs scabies can cause bumps, itching to humans. What parts of the dog body are infected the most  by scabies


Generally, the symptoms appear in ear flaps, elbows, hocks, ventral abdomen, and chest and eventually most body parts of the infected dog. It is necessary to confer with your veterinarian if you suspect an infestation of mange on their skin.


What causes scabies in dogs?


Scabies in dogs is caused by microscopic parasites called “sarcoptic mange”, transmitted through direct contact with infected dogs, foxes or coyotes, also, Kennels, groomers, animal shelters, and veterinary clinics; these are the most important places and reasons why your dogs get scabies; because they are ideal places for transporting the parasite from an infected dog to another…the mite got themselves attached to the skin of your dog and after mating, the female mite burrows under the skin of the pet. This horrible parasite is extremely contagious and can spread from a dog to another animal or a person.


There are two kinds of scabies in dogs


1- ‘Sarcoptic mange: known as scabies 

Caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, causes severe itching; it causes constant scratching. Those symptoms appear ten days or more after infection. 


2- ‘Demodectic mange: known as red mange or Demodex

Caused by a mite called Demodex canis, this comes with a lot of signs on the body of the dog such as hair loss, sores, and bald spots. If the dog’s immune system is weak, the infection will be itchy and painful, even deadly.

Can a person get scabies from a dog?


These tiny parasites can live on animals, including dogs, cats, and humans. Still, Animal mites don’t survive well on human skin. The mites that affect humans are a distinct species called Sarcoptes scabiei hominis and animals are suffering from another type called Sarcoptes scabiei Canis; the conclusion is that humans can’t get scabies from dogs, although they’ll get a tiny low rash. If your dog is suspected to have scabies, you must keep them off furniture, and wash their bedding; as well, avoid very close contact.


Scabies treatment for dogs


Treatment of dog scabies may be done topically or systemically; these are the foremost used and effective treatment:

Permethrin dip (or spray), sulfur lotion, and Ivermectin oral (Ivomec), Dimpylate (that is diazinon), Selamectin (Revolution), Milbemycin oxime, Doramectin (Dectomax)…

First, think to Clip your dog before topical treatment. In addition, Treat of the environment (Pet bedding/toys/carpeting…) with a pesticide.


The permethrin

Consult a vet before using Permethrin spray on debilitated, aged, medicated, pregnant or nursing animals; Use Permethrin one time every two weeks. Must wipe the dog first and let it dry.


Sulfur lotion 

As a topical treatment, you can use Lime sulfur 2% dips every five to seven days, it’s an efficient compound utilized in North America, but it is not available in Europe. Also, Fiprinol spray (Frontline) and Amitraz (Mitaban) once weekly.


How to use Ivermectin for dogs

Ivermectin has insecticide, acaricide, and anthelmintic properties. The great thing about this treatment is the quick response from the dog; as you’ll be able to notice a difference in just 5 days. Still, It mustn’t be used for, Shetland sheepdogs, Collies or other herding breeds. 

Put the medication directly into the dog’s mouth; as this is often better than mixing it with food, it may not have the benefit of the entire treatment to make certain your dog gets it all. 

The precise dosage is 0.034cc per 10 pounds (4.54 kg) of body weight.


Home remedies to treat scabies on dogs?


Home remedies that can be helpful for the treatment of scabies on the skin of your dogs; but first and foremost, the veterinarian should be consulted; because there are not enough scientific experiments on the success and safety of the natural treatment for dog scabies.


APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

You can utilize the apple cider vinegar to take a bath for the dog; by mixing a half cup of ACV with a half cup of borax and hot water. Mix well to make sure the borax melts before applying the mixture on your dog’s skin and coat; don’t let the dog lick the recipe by using a cone collar; because it can be harmful. Finally, let air dry the solution.


HONEY

Honey contains unbelievable properties and can be used for the treatment of so many ailments for animals the same as humans.

The antibacterial and antioxidant properties that it contains will help heal the sore, skin while building immunity.

Apply honey directly to the sores.


OLIVE OIL

 Use olive oil in the affected areas, so, it can soothe the skin and help in getting rid of scabies so quickly.


NEEM SHAMPOO

Some laboratory experiments have confirmed that the use of Neem seed extract shampoo can eliminate scabies in dogs; because 80% of dogs treated with Neem had no symptoms of scabies after a few weeks of treatment.
