WHAT DOES SCABIES LOOK LIKE?

Scabies looks like tiny, snaking, raised red bumps lines, resembling pimples and often are mistakenly joined to insect bites; these are not scabies bites, they’re a result of an allergy that the skin develops to the presence of the mites. In order to reproduce, the female burrows into the skin to lay eggs, causing an appearance of some tiny spots and silver-colored lines on the body, it may also look like a crooked, raised rash or crusting.


HOW TO IDENTIFY SCABIES?

To identify scabies a doctor has to use a magnifying lens or what we call: dermatoscopy, in order to examine a small section of the skin after scraping it off; if you doubt that you have scabies don’t attempt to identify it by yourself, you need to consult a healthcare provider; because this skin condition could also be mistaken for Dermatitis or eczema or an allergy to certain drugs; as scabies rash have approximately identical symptoms and look similar for a non-specialist.


HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE SCABIES?

Only a doctor or a nurse can confirm that you have scabies or not, however, there are some signs that let you know that you have it:

  • Intense itching that gets worse at night.
  • Bumps on the skin
  • If you notice wavy lines.
  • Especially between the fingers and the back of the hand or in the areas in the following image:

SCABIES DEFINITION:

By definition, scabies is a contagious skin disease, pronounced: skābēz/ skeɪbiz; caused by a tiny (0,4mm) mite called Sarcoptes Scabiei; this microscopic parasite burrows into the skin to lay their eggs, causing a horrible rash that gets worse at night. This skin condition can spread through close skin to skin contact from a person to another if he has it already, especially in crowded living conditions or during sex.

WHAT DOES SCABIES LOOK LIKE ON A DOG?

If your dog has scabies, it will look like an inflammation of the skin, causing an intense rash and itching. Also, you may notice some hair loss, and sores, in severe cases your pet will begin to lose weight.

Dogs develop another type of scabies called: Sarcoptic mange, or Sarcoptes scabiei Canis, it is contagious to other dogs, but it does not affect humans, however, it may lead to minor symptoms that will go away after a few days.

Scabies is an eight legs skin parasite, its length does not exceed 0.5 millimeters, hard to identify just by the naked eye; that’s why dermatologist uses a microscope or magnifying glass after taking a scraping from the affected area of the skin to examine; in order to ensure the presence of the mites or their eggs.


WHAT DOES CRUSTED SCABIES LOOK LIKE?

Also called Norwegian scabies, first discovered in Norway, it is the foremost severe and dangerous type of scabies, characterized by a thick, grayish crust on the skin. Normally, it affects people with weak immune systems, allowing the mites to extend dramatically in number. This is how crusted scabies looks like:
